Manipulation Detection Protocol
Axiom: When systems or people want to control you, they manipulate your CARDS.
The Pattern
- Destabilise: They make you feel afraid, angry, ashamed, or special. Your CARDS move fast into Red — or artificially into Green.
- Tunnel Vision: They offer one specific solution: buy, join, believe, obey, click.
- Urgency: They push you to act quickly without thinking or checking your internal state.
The Counter-Protocol
If your CARDS change velocity too fast — STOP.
Pause and ask:
- Which of my CARDS got pushed into Red or Green?
- Who benefits if I buy, join, believe, do, or share this?
- Is there another way to meet this need?
The Rule
If your CARDS change very fast — stop, wait, and check.
Examples
- Advertising often targets Safety (fear) and Relatedness (belonging) to create urgency.
- Social pressure targets Relatedness (exclusion threat) and Dignity (shame).
- Scams target Competence (you've been selected!) and Safety (act now before it's too late!).
- Gaslighting targets all five CARDS simultaneously — destabilising your sense of competence, autonomy, belonging, dignity, and safety.
Why This Matters
The Manipulation Detection Protocol is not paranoia. It is pattern recognition. CARDS gives you a language for noticing when your need states are being played — and a practice for pausing before you react.
